Trinidad and Tobago, February 16-25,
2011

This ten-day Caligo Nature Tours trip, with two days for travel on either end, included five days plus an early morning in Trinidad and three days in Tobago. Our base for the first part was at the world famous Asa Wright Nature Centre in the rainforest in Trinidad. The birding from the veranda was every bit as good as billed and included a fabulous view of the rain forest, shown above.
Full of anticipation - this was our first birding trip south of the US - we headed to the veranda at first light. Following are some of the birds that greeted us.

Green Honeycreeper - male left and female right

Male Purple Honeycreeper

Palm Tanager
Probably the most common tanager on Trinidad.

Male White-lined Tanager
Very common. The white wing
linings, not seen here, are flashed conspicuously by the males.

Great Kiskadee
Also very common.

Ochre-bellied Flycatcher
One or two of these birds
were usually in the Trema trees next to the veranda.

Male White-necked Jacobin
One of 11 species of hummingbirds on the
trip. Two other species were seen too briefly by us to identify.

Blue-crowned Motmot
One of the signature birds of this country, it was
frequently seen from the veranda as well as other spots in T&T.
