The
Warbler Series During migration
small brightly colored birds called warblers pass
through the Northeast.
On their way to and from nesting grounds, they can be found zipping through trees
and shrubs and even on the ground. These pictures are the result of many hours
spent stalking warblers in the spring and fall with a video camera. All are oil pastels and 14x18 unless otherwise noted.

The Environmental Paintings In the late eighties, early nineties, I spent a few summers helping on the New York Natural Heritage Program. The program’s purpose was to find and catalogue rare and endangered plant species in the state and create a database of information to help protect important plant communities. To this end I accompanied an excellent botanist to a tremendous variety of habitats the likes of which I had never seen before. These places were right in Western New York! I suspect this experience was the impetus for what I jokingly call my “wilderness paintings,” AKA the Environmental Paintings. My poem, “Wilderness” tells about my commitment to speak out about habitat loss. |
