On March 17, 2011 I went outside our home to try to digiscope the redpolls that were coming to our feeders. I soon found a male Hoary Redpoll in our apple tree. When I put him in the scope, I noticed a second male Hoary nearby.

On March 16, 2011 I stopped on my way home from work to look over a field full of gulls. I found 3 Iceland, 2 Glaucous, 1 Lesser Black-backed, and an adult Slaty-backed Gull. I waited nearly two hours to finally see what I needed to confirm the identification of the Slaty-backed - the spread wing pattern. Here are two shots of the bird in the field.

The goose migration has started in earnest with Canada Geese pouring into Western New York. On March 11 and 12, 2011, I scanned through a huge flock of geese in a field in the Town of Hartland, Niagara County and found 37 Cackling Geese. The following four images were taken on March 12th.
